It’s Queen Beatrix Day in Netherlands on 30 April. However, it took a tragic turn when a car careered into a crowd of people watching the birthday celebration parade. As Queen Beatrix and her family passed by in an open bus, the car smashed through the police barriers and it was thought to be an attempt to harm the royal family. The incident killed 5 people and injured 12 other people. The royal family was unhurt. As a result, all celebrations were cancelled.

In a televised address, a clearly-shaken Queen Beatrix said: “What began as a great day has ended in a terrible tragedy that has shocked us all deeply. We are speechless that something so terrible could have happened. My family, and I think everybody in the country, sympathise with the victims, their families and friends and all who have been hit so hard by this accident.”
